Subject: Response - And a note on incorporating other folk's work into your site without even having to ask!
In reply to: Lisa-DanceAgain 's message, "I don't understand why people would want to use someone elses text! more.." on 15:19:42 01/06/02 Sun

LISA: "Ashe, do you know, is it as simple as putting a copyright sign up on your site?"

I don't know. I don't think so - seeing that through legal eyes, though.

Now taking "it" as stopping content predators from attacking your site, it's a little more complicated than that, but not so much. I have the copyright notice on each page, have written numerous times on the importance of not taking things from others and being original, BUT here's the most important part:

I track down and follow through with the people who have attacked my work.

An email is usually all it takes to start something. And here's also the best part of having Diochra so known (and it's only known because of word-of-mouth about my original work that's been put into it): others appreciate it so that they HELP me in my goal to track down people. I've had people REPORTED to me multiple times. Of course, I also put this into a note on my website asking "If such and such shows up on something else, please notify me at..." I've had some false alarms (people reporting people that had already asked), but that's a good thing. I think this would work with Dance Again as well, but it's quite a bit harder - you're working with other people's stuff, and they have the freedom to do with it what they will, so you don't know who gave what to whom.

(Oh, and if anyone finds spelling errors ANYWHERE, please for the love of the English language email me so I can fix it!)

LISA: "I find it ironic that one site that has borrowed my dress ads has a copyright on the home page stating that all contents of their site are copyrighted!"

Yeah, that's beautiful, isn't it? I know jsut what you're talking about.

I have this odd little theory that's turning into Diochra's Featured Links. I think there's pretty much a very select few sites that you could go to for certain things. Diochra's one of them for my own reasons but I'm not including myself. ;) Need solid information? Go to Ireland's Dance. Need a good consignment site? Go to Dance Again! (I do - man, Lisa, and I love it. If you ever get into web hosting trouble again, just tap me on the shoulder. I've sold two pairs of softshoes, one pair of hardshoes, and now I've got one soft and one hard up on there again! I've even bought a pair of Fays off of it just this week, I don't know if you've been told to take them off yet but we'll talk.)

Now here's the part about how to incorporate other people's work into your site without even having to ask!

I'm doing this with the new and improved Diochra. Jess has some excellent articles on her site that I would LOVE to be a part of Diochra. Theresa's quips I want to grab. You can't live without Toireasa's tips and tricks. So how do I "steal" those and put them into Diochra without even asking?!

I link to their site. Duh!

For example, in my information --> history section, I want Jess's History article. So I just link to it! Just like I've done for other sites that aren't operated by dancers.

This way:
1. I get what I want on my site
2. There's less gosh darn WORK for me while still having quality information
3. The website owner still has control of their stuff
4. The links provide a gateway to their site as a whole
5. The website owner knows (or should know!) that I really appreciate their work on the web
6. It's no longer competitive as to who has the best content, because let's face it, we ALL do (which is something that IMHO Irish dancing needs)
7. But yet I still have people coming to my website for the information because it's like a one-stop shop

See the happy smiling visitors to your site, and the happy smiling webmasters? Aww. Don't be a hero and drive yourself crazy getting the best stuff to be the "website to end all websites" - share that goal with the community.

Let's all hold hands and sing Kumbayah.
