Subject: Too old for MS????
In reply to: Sharron 's message, "neuro appointment update" on 12:22:07 05/26/00 Fri

Doctors can be SO PATHETIC some times!
I went back & found this string started by DonnaGayle on the MGH Forum. I bumped it up so you could find it.

Here are some excerpts:
Linda J (dx@57)
"How about age 57 at dx in Aug of 99??!! My neuro said I couldn't possibly have MS, but he was wrong.
Started in April 99 with numb and tingling feet which progressed up to mid calf. Then came a numb bottom. I was too scared to tell anybody. When I had a panic attack and ended up in ER, dr said Peripheral Neuropathy and see my own PCP. She could find no reason and sent me to stress counsellor who gave me Paxil. Numbness regressed so they figured they were right and I was crazy....WRONG!!

In July I got what appeared to be a small smudge in right eye. Sent to Optho who said Optic Neuritis - will get dramatically worse and better slowly - and "by the way, you probably have MS". Lost 98% of sight in right eye in 4 days (while out of town).

Went to neuro who said couldn't be MS but ordered MRI and SoluMedrol to get back sight. Got it back but lost it again two weeks later. More SoluMedrol. Every blood test they could think of and Spinal Tap.

Neuro confirmed RRMS in August and started me on Copaxone"

"I was dx. Dec99. with progressive MS. 1 year earlier I found I was falling down - clumsy- alot when I was out walking - which I did alot of, then I started to get tired, and then after a particulary nasty fall that agravated the arthritis in my knee I went to Dr. for Xrays. - my right leg wasnt picking up when I walked - and then my big toe went numb! I thought I had a herniated disc -back pain for years. But Dr. asked what about your eyesight - oh yeah my vision had just gone blurry when reading, what about bladder, - well I'm 46, 2 kids and when I laugh and some other times I had had a problem - she sent me to neuro!!. Looking back now, I was a clumsy 19 year old, had neuralgia in 20's, Migraines in 30's, Bells Palsy for 6 weeks, dropped things constantly for 2 months at 43 and then at 45 all this! I have been on Rebif for 4 and a half months and I think it is kicking in - since I have been on it I have also had vertigo, dizziness-nausea but I am at about 2 weeks now feeling GOOD.
The weird thing about this is how it affects people differently and day to day. My suggestion to you would be to find out all you can - and you will get great support here frm people who understand. All the best, Liz-Anne"

"I'm nearly 50, was dx two years ago. As far as I know my episode began with very nasty virus/flu that lasted a week or so, high fever, exhausted, sweats, slept 20 hours a day. Not long after I noticed some numbness in a leg then both legs in morning seemd to come and go. Also had extraordinary fatigue but didn't connect the two. When numbness kept coming back I finally went to docs and after testing discovered numerous lesions in brain and spine. Presently I have only mild sx, mild fatigue, weakness, some cognitive (altho how much of that is my age???). Anyway I expect what you will see is the lack of consistency in our stories--MS is so personalized for each of us. Hope this helps. Good luck, you've found a great group here.

"I was DX at the age of 41. I had ON in my left eye in Nov. of 97. I was DX 3 mo. later
Feb. 98. One of the eye Dr. I saw said I had ON before cause there is scaring on my left eye, I did not know it at the time never seemed to have messed up vision. My neuro thinks I have had this since "91" when I had numbing in my face , gums,& tongue. But I guess we will never know on that one. Saw my neuro yesterday and he says I am stable. My MRI had alot of scarring on it in "97". I had alot of activity last fall and the Dr. put me on Copaxone. I had one eye twitching all the time, pins & needles in my hands and feet. I lost the use of my left leg for about an hour, also numbing in my mouth and lips, Was also losing urine. Which the neuro added up to be to much activity. So I have had things going on the last 9 yrs. but have only been DX for the last two. I wish U all the luck with getting a DX. Let us know how your doing every once in a while."

Rob (dx@45)
"I'm now 52 and was first officially dx'ed at 45 so it's not that rescent. Probably started with ON at age 27. I started with a bad case of ON but regained my sight in a few weeks and prednisone. Virtually nothing occurred for 19 years then in 1993 I started to go numb on the right side of my body. I was officialy dx'ed by MRI and it's been a steady down hill slide since then. I finally got my neuro to put me on Copaxone in '98 after Betaseron didn't work for me. Now hanging in there and waiting."
