Well, this is what my bf says too, he did have a chance to read the short story and without even seeing the movie he said that it seems like they just completely disregarded the original work. But i disagree that it's necessarily a bad thing. There is such thing as ADAPTED SCREENPLAY and almost always, it veers from the original. i mean, they made a 3 hour movie out of a 35 page short story, there's no way it was possible to keep it exactly the same and have it make sense. From what i gather, the original was a more satiric look at the character's aging predicament. I truly feel the took something that had an interesting premise and concept but was half-baked as a story (no offense to F. Scott Fitzerald LOL) and turned it into something way better, deeper, that resonated with people and was a beautiful love story. So hooray to Eric Roth (the writer) for that. He also, by the way, adapted the screenplay for Forrest Gump and we know that movie was very well received and won Best Picture Oscar amongst many others in 1994. So i am totally not on the same page as this poster, i think she needs to get her head out of her ass and realize that adapting an original work means changing it around and making it better a lot of the time, adding adventures in characters' lives and the kind of depth to them that is indispensable in the long run.

I do appreciate the link to the short story online though, i plan on reading it later on so i can form a better judgement but i still think they did a great job adapting something like that to the big screen.
