Has anyone heard who is teaching "MMA" ground work and striking at Rapid Fitness? It's a new gym on Glenwood in Raleigh. Apparently they have a ring and cage.

I just called and they said the instructor is Chris, but they had no last name. Is it you Chris Bright?

It is odd that there are so many fitness places trying to bring in a MMA crowd. I loved fighting when I did it. I still consider fighting again. I love to train fighters and I love when they do well in competition. BUT the simple fact is I do not market or promote my gym based on fighting MMA.

IT seems to me you draw in alot of doofs who are more worried about rushing to fight and not enough people who want to legitimately learn grappling and kickboxing (or boxing or whatever your flavor for slugging it out) in and of themselves for their own worth.

Dont get me wrong, people who are legitimately driven and hard working who want to fight I love to work with. I have ZERO interest in trying to talk someone into fighting though, and several of these places seem to try to sell turning everyone into a fighter. IME the only way to foster that illusion is to not really put people through the paces. Which can be detrimental to the people fighting and makes no sense in the first place.

Does that gym have a website?

Rick, I haven't been by or called, but that's what the site says. If you look under amenities, it pulls up a layout of the gym. They have an area for "MMA" with a cage (which they call octagon of course) and boxing with a ring.

It's tough to buy into the whole "MMA" thing without a description of the BJJ, MT, wrestling, etc. coaches and their experience/rank.

It seems like from a marketing point of view, they would advertise the training (for fun), not the "we'll make you an MMA fighter".

I have no ambitions to step into a ring or cage outside of training. I just love BJJ and MT.

I hope these gyms know what they are doing. I'd hate to see someone get built up just to find out the hard way that they don't know what they are getting into once they step into a competition.

-I agree. Unfortunately it will be the misinformed “fighter” who pays the price when it should be their over ambitious trainer.
-Apparently it’s just not MMA without an octagon!!

I guess you have not seen many amatuer MMA fighting in NC since it was legal? Becuase if you had you would know it happens EVERY WEEKEND with regards to someone undertrained getting over matched.

Trainers should always have the best interests of their guys as priorities. IF you dont know what you are doing its in your guy's best interest to go somewhere else, the problem with being a dumbass, is that dumbasses never realize they are the prolem. Too dumb to see it. But competiton aside, its flat out lying IMO if you cant competently teach what you say you are selling.

I hate to hear that. I've been to a few in neighboring states, but none in NC yet (seems like I'm always out of town on those weekends). The ones that I have been top were pretty good (making sure to match guys up correctly).

This is happening everyday now, but I see it both ways now, guys come in my gym and say i am fighting in 3 weeks or 6 weeks and want me to get them ready.

last month a kid joined my gym and the next day he submitted his fighter information to a promoter and used my name as his "Team" I was very hot about that.

but what do you do in the end? you try to help the poor souls. I can just imagine some of these guys go do the same thing in another gym and they dont tell them what they really need to hear. "you are not ready yet"
