Your performance changes according to what the task is....

Jordan proved it in basketball (highlevel) and baseball (marginal).

the gi is training tool, no different than a boxing glove is used to improve performance. Ex: You want to learn how to evade jabs, I put a glove on to protect my hand and you put on a head gear for protection. I throw jabs, you learn to move. Technique will improve by measurement of the performance.

the gi is no different/ You want to learn how to avoid gi
chokes, put on a gi - I will attempt to choke.

These one-sided drills are task oriented and help build your arsenal of weapons in a progressive manner, but if we want to spar under certian conditions (called rules) we have to give ourselves over to that standard. A student once had the pleasure of meeting a World Class Wing Chun man who teaching one night and asked "What if I double legged you and took you down?" He said he would fall down "but you would not be doing wing chun."

Maybe you should make the Smack talker put the gi-on to roll
but you shouldn't go out of your way to impress this guy.

A coach is not measured by his ability or his fighters ability, rather he is measured by his ability to improve the quality of anothers performance.

James I understand and feel your pain but the Gi may or may not have helped. The loud mouth in question was a "gym warrior", way to concerned about gym contests and not concerned enough with training and learning.

No matter who tapped him or how he did training with the class as a whole the only story he is going to tell is that he beat on a blue belt, regardless of how many other guys tapped him or dominated him positionally.

People like that want to feel as if the "could" fight by going hard in the gym and once in a great while a gym warrior decides he is going to fight, but oh my lord the excuses I have heard when fight time starts to close in. "I dont know my opponent might be better at this, my back is sore, I have a bone in my leg, blah, blah, you name it.

I am glad to say where I train now, Brian has a good crew of newer guys who just work hard and no one thinks they are something they are not. Refreshing, but he has only been open for less than half a year, so I am sure we are due for a visit from some tool-box in the near future, its inevitable with the popularity of MMA and BJJ growing like mad and the sport seems to draw em like flies to poo.
