Subject: Dead Forum Cont. Belt Ranking for NO-GI Schools

I like what I saw in the “When do you start doing no-gi in BJJ” and stuff. And seems like Tracy, Guy and others seem to be on the same wavelength with me on gi training. Start of in the gi first and get a good base.

But it brings up another point there are a few instructors(none on this forum LOL) that only do no-gi, their whole school is no-gi, but they promote in BJJ rankings for belts. To me if you don’t train in a gi why are you getting a belt that is warn with a gi?? Kina like getting a blue belt for collegiate wrestling or baseball.

You can go from gi to no-gi a lot easier then going from no-gi to gi, right??

Just Asking.

I'm Just talking about BJJ belt rankings.

The only school I can think of off the top of my head that does strictly no-gi grappling (99.9% positive I'm right)
is East Coast Submissions. So, maybe Danny can answer that question. Then again I don't know how he does his ranking system (if he has one) for his grappling piece of his program. On a side note, I know of a few schools that are implementing a new system for their no gi classes. Each student wears a colored shirt that represents their respective belt rank in bjj.

I was talking about schools like Eddie Bravo’s school that claims the Gi training is useless. And I know I have heard I quite a few times over the last few years that there are many students that train at a gi school that get bjj ranked and never putting on a gi. They always do no-gi, never buying a gi and training with a gi. Quite a few fighters on the TUF show fit that scenario. Hey I’m not in a position to critique anyone, but it is a GI art isn’t it??

Mebbe I need to look into this. My old blood and coffe stained white belt still has that one black stripe on it, and I dont like it.

I think the gi is something someone likes or not. Personal preference. I think gi training could be beneficial to MMA but I can certainly understand not wanting to train in one for MMA. By the way, I'm undefeated in MMA competition. Yup, 0-0-0 so take it for what it's worth.

I guess my point earlier in saying new guys should wear the gi is so many people just use strength and muscle to power out of stuff that they never learn the actual submission or escape. Strenth, sweat and power go a long way often times but ultimately I think the technique is what you want. When you get a guy who has the strength & power AND technique, he's bad a$$.

This happened a few months ago, I let another clubs student visiting from another area roll with our guys on a weekend he came a few times and everything seemed cool. He claimed to have a few months of training only did no-gi but that was cool it was during an open mat. And he had skills. Didn’t know he was talking smack about one of our blue belts. Now let me explain I have a blue belt that just got his blue belt in Seattle Washington right before he took a job here, and he is about 50 years old, he is doing this to stay in shape, had a heart attack 3 years ago, due to stress. But you couldn’t tell it by looking at him. Or rolling with him, but to have someone who haven’t put a gi to make a comment “I was expecting more out of a blue belt”

I guess it takes all kinds.

One of our guys told him “to put a gi on and see if that changes his mind”

Oh by the way, he wasn’t from anyone’s gym that posts here.

Your performance changes according to what the task is....

Jordan proved it in basketball (highlevel) and baseball (marginal).

the gi is training tool, no different than a boxing glove is used to improve performance. Ex: You want to learn how to evade jabs, I put a glove on to protect my hand and you put on a head gear for protection. I throw jabs, you learn to move. Technique will improve by measurement of the performance.

the gi is no different/ You want to learn how to avoid gi
chokes, put on a gi - I will attempt to choke.

These one-sided drills are task oriented and help build your arsenal of weapons in a progressive manner, but if we want to spar under certian conditions (called rules) we have to give ourselves over to that standard. A student once had the pleasure of meeting a World Class Wing Chun man who teaching one night and asked "What if I double legged you and took you down?" He said he would fall down "but you would not be doing wing chun."

Maybe you should make the Smack talker put the gi-on to roll
but you shouldn't go out of your way to impress this guy.

A coach is not measured by his ability or his fighters ability, rather he is measured by his ability to improve the quality of anothers performance.

James I understand and feel your pain but the Gi may or may not have helped. The loud mouth in question was a "gym warrior", way to concerned about gym contests and not concerned enough with training and learning.

No matter who tapped him or how he did training with the class as a whole the only story he is going to tell is that he beat on a blue belt, regardless of how many other guys tapped him or dominated him positionally.

People like that want to feel as if the "could" fight by going hard in the gym and once in a great while a gym warrior decides he is going to fight, but oh my lord the excuses I have heard when fight time starts to close in. "I dont know my opponent might be better at this, my back is sore, I have a bone in my leg, blah, blah, you name it.

I am glad to say where I train now, Brian has a good crew of newer guys who just work hard and no one thinks they are something they are not. Refreshing, but he has only been open for less than half a year, so I am sure we are due for a visit from some tool-box in the near future, its inevitable with the popularity of MMA and BJJ growing like mad and the sport seems to draw em like flies to poo.

James' story reminds me of the guy who comes in and claims that he is new but then proceeds to try to rip your head off when rolling and obviously has had some training before. I always try to go easy on new people but have to laugh when a guy either claims to be brand new or hurt and taking it easy and then goes 110% when you start. Different issue but still amuzing.

Paul Creighton in Atlanta is giving No-Gi shirts/ashguards for his no gi guys, but they have to train with the gi until they at least get their 3rd white stripe with gi.

I knew a coach wasnt "measured by his ability" but i aways thought about coaches being measured but his fighters ability, we all do it, but the "ability to improve the quality" is the real deal.

thanks SES
