Why are you sick of Barry Bonds? Because he's surly towards the media that ask the STUPIDEST questions possible, repeatedly? I'd have an attitude also. Maybe Jeff Kent is the problem child? Who are we to say?

I like watching Barry Bonds, because I enjoy watching what could be the greatest hitter to have ever played this game. He DESTROYED Ted Williams' record for OBP, his own record for walks in a season, the record for Intentional walks (IBB) in a season, and he recorded the highest OPS for a season EVER. One sign of a really good hitter, is a guy that walks as much, or more than, he strikes out -- Bonds had 68 intentional(!) walks to 47 strikeouts. Without a way to check stats on IBB from Ruth's era, I still feel pretty comfortable saying that no one with a significant amount of AB's in a season has ever had even 1 more IBB than strikeouts, much less 21 more. Oh yeah, and he had 198 walks total.

This isn't aimed at anyone in particular, it's just something that's been brewing with me for awhile. It started last year when he had the HR chase, and culminated in this World Series. I wish people would concentrate a little less on how they perceive him to be, and more on the baseball player that he is. Maybe I'm just getting soft in my old age, especially since he is on the "enemy" Giants -- but when I go to a baseball game as I did earlier this season, and see him hit the longest HR in the history of the stadium, I'm not going to boo him or cuss him out because he wears a scowl sometimes. Something like that is so awe inspiring, that you forget for a moment the damage it did to your team. My brother was with me that day, who doesn't know squat about baseball or individual players, and he came away saying that it was the most amazing thing he's ever seen. It hit a Coca Cola sign, above his picture, on the Jumbotron in right centerfield. The base of that scoreboard is right around 500 feet from home plate. Of course, he paused at home to watch it. So what? I would have paused too. I don't mind when Klesko pauses after a HR, and I've seen Thome, McGwire, and countless others pause after a majestic HR.

I've heard people say how much they would have loved to have seen Ruth play. Even though a common perception of him is as a drinking, self-indulgent, womanizer. Well, we do get to see Barry Bonds play, and I can't wait til I'm 70 years old and can tell some kid just how amazing it was.
