Subject: Gammons

Here is the best example of why I hate Peter Gammons. THis week in his ESPN feature piece, we were treated to the following opening paragraph.

"That Bartolo Colon went to Montreal stunned some, and one Boston talk-show host even concocted a conspiracy theory that would have made James Garrison chuckle."

Now, I am sure that right now you are wondering what that conspiracy theory is. Well so am I. He does this ALL of the time. He throws out some little bit of data and just expect that we all live in Boston and were listening to whatever crappy sports show they have going on. It doesn't just include Beantown references, he is always saying something like "The Braves are trying to put together a trade for Benji Gil, but after the mayonaise incident last year in the Braves bat-boy's toolbox, it is doubtful that the Angels will welcome any more insurance salemen into the bullpen again" Expecting everyone to know about the toolbox incident, or anything about the insurance saleman.
He just has all of these reference points that while he may know what he is talking about, no one else does. I am guessing that he does that so he can sound so very informed.
I have heard other people rag on Gammons before, so I am not acting like I am working alone here. I guess I am wondering if anyone else has noticed this about him and/or hates him.
Now, all of that said, he does usually put together alot of data that I find useful and appears to be one of the better informed baseball writers out there. He is very well plugged in.
One more complaint. If you read his email QandA, you may have noticed how when someone emails him with more than one quesiton, he will often just answer one question with a brief answer and then move on, ignoring the other questions without any apperant thought as to which question the emailer really wanted answered.
It looks something like this:
Q "Peter, I was wondering if you thought that the Phillies could move Scott Rolen and get some young pitching prospects. What would you think about them sending him to the Indians for Baez, Sabathia and Rincon? Do the Indians have any better pitchers that the Phil's could ask for? Also, do you think that I should be really happy about the start that Vincente Padilla is having? Do you think that he is the real thing, or that he is just sneaking up on the rest of the league and they will soon figure him out? Oh and could you tell me if Benji Gil hits righty or lefty? Thanks, Your Fan, Timmy"

A:"Timmy, Gil hits righthanded"

So there is my diatribe against Peter Gammons. I look forward to seeing what any of yall think about it.
