OK Steve, you say he isn't there, and I say he is every bit there, they just do it in different ways, but they end up with very similar numbers. Here's a comparison for Jeter/Tejada: Games-150/162 (Tejada is an everyday player), AB-614/622( even in fewer games, Jeter's team hit for better average, thereby allowing him almost as many chances in 12 fewer games), Runs- 110/107 ( almost dead even), Hits-191/166( which shows Tejada gets it done even with a lower average), 2B-35/31( close again), 3B- 3 each, HR-21/31( where Tejada makes up for some of the loss in average), RBI-74/113( Jeter has almost as many AB's in 12 fewer games, and a decidedly better average, so how do you explain this?), BB-56/43 (Jeter's more patient and experienced right?), SO- 99/89 ( So explain to me how a 19 mill a year singles hitter strikes out more than a borderline powerhitter), SB- 27/11 ( obvious edge to Jeter, but also team philosophy is part of this story), OBP- .377/.326( again Jeter), and AVG-.311/267 ( thought it is worth noting Jeters average is 9 points lower than his average, and Tejada's is 10 points higher). As for defense, Jeter had 15 E's, Tejada 20, but Jeter only got 68 DP's, Tejada 93, and they fielded .974 and .973, so again, they're about even. I'm not arguing Jeter isn't possibly the best clutch player of this generation, this isn't a debate on rings, before that one rears it's ugly and nonsensical head into this discussion, I'm saying Tejada IS there. And if you wanna talk tiers and levels, A-Rod raised the bar so far out of reach for the rest of the field, he deserves his own tier, then you can discuss everyone else.
