Subject: Seth's offseason moves thread.... continued

Well, for the last 3 days I've tried to figure out how I could argue the Indians' side of this... maybe I just wanted to make Kathy feel better... but I give up.

I like Matt Lawton, and he makes for a viable replacement for Kenny Lofton. Good OBP, good teammate, already in his 30's. Alex Escobar was the #1 prospect in the Mets organization. Sounds nice, but in this case, it's a relative term. He's injury prone, and he strikes out like Preston Wilson. He has 30 HR/30 SB potential, and he is legitimate CF, but potential just gets GM's fired. I don't want to say the name Ruben Rivera, but...uhh, I guess I just did. Jerrod Riggan will be a good guy to have in the bullpen, and I think he's a solid pick up. I wouldn't be surprised to see Cleveland try to make him a starter like he was early in his career... or he could just be that guy that every AL team needs, that can come out of the bullpen in the 2nd inning and give you 4+ innings.

For the top all-around 2nd baseman in the league, this reeks of salary dumping and rebuilding. But Cleveland didn't really get much to rebuild with... unless Escobar reaches his potential. The minor leaguer they're getting, I believe it's Billy Traber, could end up being the best player in the deal, but he just turned 22, doesn't have much pro experience, and has had elbow problems.

If Cleveland had gotten, say Matt Lawton, Pat Strange, and Grant Roberts, then it would seem like a more productive trade.

Anyway... wow, Crazy Carl in Texas?? who'd have thunk it? Those Rangers, always adding offense! At least you got rid of the worst pitcher in baseball in the deal. And I'm sure the Rangers aren't done. In fact, Everett was supposed to go to San Diego, and it wouldn't surprise me if he or Kapler did still. I'd give up Bubba Trammell and Kevin Jarvis for Everett. Anyway, I think one of those two (Everett & Kapler), and maybe Pena and Mench, will be traded for some pitching. The Rangers are in a good position to trade from their strength to fill their weakness... if they do it is another question. They'd be smart to trade for at least one starter, and then try to sign Nomo and/or Terry Adams.
