Alrighty then. First off, I'd suggest finding a soft place to land and someone to spot. As this is not always possible, at least be careful...
For the front flip, you basically jump up with your hands in the air, hollow your body, and throw your hands to your shins while you are tucking into a ball. Haha, poor description... As I'm sure you've seen front flips, the key points are tuck, the hand throw, and the hollow body.
What is the hollow body you say? Well just imagine your laying flat out with your back on the ground. Now if you raise your feet and raise your head while stretching your hands above your head.. that's the hollow body. In that position you should be curved like a rocking chair rocker and be able to rock as well ;) In any case, you'll want the same position as your feet leave the ground. Because if you jump straight up and tuck and throw, you won't have any rotation. Make sense? So you're back is slighty curved.
So jump, hollow the body, and tuck and throw those hands HARD. That's what'll flip you. With luck, you'll rotate in the air and land on your feet... or maybe your hands and feet. And for pete's sake, jump UP there, or you'll find yourself somersaulting into the ground.
Onto the backflip. With the backflip there is no hollowbody, quite the contrary. You'll need to jump up in the air and throw your arms toward the sky. Your back will be straight as you can, not hollowed. So when you're up there, you tuck your knees to your chest FAST and HARD and bring your arms to your shins. At this point, if you throw your arms down as with the front flip, you'll negate the momentum your knees are creating, so just bring them down there. This will probably feel more natural than I'm The knees to your chest are the driving force behind the backflip, just like the arms thrown down are the force behind the front flip.
Anyhooo, so you're up in the air, you've just tucked your knees to your chest and your hands have come down to make you a nice ball that is currently flipping backwards. So you'll be able to see the ground, so when you're right side up again, just extend your legs. Presto.
Despite most fears, it's hard to land on your head trying these. Only if you half-ass it and stall on the rotation will you land on your neck. So it's all or nothing with these babies.
Whew boy, a whole lot of explaining. Good luck.
