Hi Michelle

I understand some of the difficulties you have made reference to. The world of disability issues is very complicated and people have different images as to what "disability" actually is. The "social model of disability" is the generally accepted UK view of disability. As far as I know there never really was an "medical model". The medical model was designed to show people what the "social model of disability" is! The people who designed the "social model of disability" were saying this is what we need in society and use the term of the "medical model" being that what was there before the "social model".

I wonder if it would not quite fit right to compare a "social model of dyslexia" with a "medical model of dyslexia" as I don't really see a medical model. I wonder if it would be more appropriate to have a "social model of dyslexia" compared with an "education model of dyslexia". As in the UK the education establishments and teachers have their ways of seeing and dealing with dyslexia while dyslexic people may see things very differently. Well just an idea what do you think?

The reason that hidden impairments are not recognised properly by society both ways in the disability community and out in the wider community. Is why I set up the Hi2u for people with hidden impairments, web site. In hope of getting better recognition for people with hidden impairments. Although I must admit I'm starting to get lazy and have not done so much lately.

With reference about dyslexia not being recognised properly within the disability community I can understand this to. I have both ADHD and dyslexia along with physical impairments. I sometimes feel discriminated by people within the physical disability movements towards my ADHD and dyslexia. I also feel discriminated by ADHD and dyslexic movements towards my physical impairment. So I think it works both ways and sometimes I think what and nightmare.

I do see dyslexia as a disability just like I see my physical impairment as a disability. I don't personally think the issues are actually different they are both the same. Both conditions make it difficult to fit in with society. Some time ago I wrote an article titled "discrimination within the disability movement". Use the following link to see this article.

Well many thanks for leaving your message on this forum I hope it will start to create some interest. I will also apologise if there are any mistakes! I use voice recognition software and often don't notice wrongly recognised words.

Look forward to receiving your views.

Andy
