Author: Primary Advisor Myclofig
Subject: "Sire? You called for me?"
In reply to: November, the Smartship 's message, ""Why are you so sad?"" on 19:30:57 03/25/02 Mon

"Yes, yes I did," said the steed Emperor Kofi Whitmane XXVII, beckoning him entrance.

Myclofig bowed, his features obscured beneath his hooded robes as always. No one, not even the Emperor himself, had ever seen his Primary Advisor's face. Yet Myclofig was among the most trusted and respected figures on all of New Kymellia. He had served at least five consecutive emperors, and had never steered any of them wrong. So accurate were his predictions, so apropos was his advice, that he was allowed his mysteries and secrets. He would often go on journies of discovery, not returning for years at a time, and would always find his position waiting for him when he got back. So vital was the knowledge he would procure on these sabbaticals that his absences were universally forgivable.

Myclofig had stood by the side of this Kofi for a good decade, with only one brief absence in that time. He had been there to console him when the Empress died birthing J'Li, and he was among the select few who knew the secret of Kofi's bloodline. Of late, as J'Li had grown more and more withdrawn, Kofi had become desperate. Myclofig had his own suggestions on the matter, and his recommendation in this case was one of the rare few the Emperor unequivocably rejected.

"I know why you call me. I saw how she was at the dinner..." he began. "Sire....Kofi...it is getting worse. If she remains she will wither and die. You seek to protect her, to shelter her, when her own body and mind know what is best for her. She must be allowed out. She must be able to roam free for a time, to learn about the SPUniverse, and herself.

I know your fears. No one knows more than I what is out there. But you aren't saving her my liege. You're slowly killing her, and I know, I KNOW you don't want that. Out of all of them, she has the best chances. This one doesn't have to end in tragedy. This one has the potential to end in LEGEND."

The Emperor did not turn, but squeezed his eyes shut, tears staining and matting his fur. Time and time again he heard these words from Myclofig. Time and time again he felt in his heart they must be true. And time and time again he thought of his daughter's childhood, and of his own family history, and could not do what he knew was right. Who was this Myclofig anyway, who was he really? Swimming amid those robes, his arms and legs making rare appearances, his eyes even less, who could say who or what he was? He spoke in a bold yet even tone, one both soothing and convincing. Was he even Kymellian? When had he arrived? When he wandered, where did he go? And how? The Empire trusted him explicitly and never questioned the things Kofi now questioned. So great was the risk of what his truly most trusted friend said, he began to formulate doubts solely to reject and idea he could not bring himself to support.

"Forgive me," said the Emperor, his voice quavering, "I called you here to convince me of that which I cannot be convinced. The risks....no, no she must stay here, stay in this paradise."

"Then, Emperor," he replied, "She shall die in paradise."

Kofi turned, words failing him, and found himself alone already. He crumpled to the floor, the most powerful figure in Kymellia, and bawled like a foal....
