Paul, I apreciate that you are both rigorous and gentle (a hard balance!) In your presentation of your beliefs. And succint as well. I want promise I'll match your brevity, but I'll try for the other two.
I suggest that this scripture merely says it's easier to be a knucklehead than a good person. It does not at all specifically refer to salvation or damnation, and even if it did, it does not preclude the possibility of their being many religious paths to salvation/liberation.
I have no problems with the idea that it's easy to be a bad person and tough to be a good person, to champion the truth. I suggest that's all this quote means.
I just had this vision of a debate leading me to make a claim later which will look like a cop-out; so I do want to stress here, before I'm "backed into a wall" that I have doubts about the authenticity of parts of the bible, see it as a creation made between man and God, and fallible as a result of the former's connection to it. I find it persuasive but not the whole story.
