Subject: Drug dealers are profiled on something besides the color of their skin
In reply to: schwabra 's message, "There was no violence at the border crossing" on 16:00:51 05/23/02 Thu

Or should be anyway.

A cop made famous on 69 minutes used to pull over every black man who drove on his highway, coming out of Miami. There were rumors that drug dealers were sending black drivers through to be pulled over while the drugs were sent in a vehicle driven by a white guy a minute or so behind.

In California, in 1999, 35,000 Hispanics were pulled over based on an overt profiling policy. There were about 200 arrests as the result, mostly on minor possession charges.

So the question is, how many potential terrorists have been caught by profiling? Is this an efficient allocation of resources? Can we assume that they don't have light skinned people in their fold? Given the policy of profiling, do you think they would attempt to send terrorist paraphernalia through with middle eastern looking young men?

And only if we answer those questions in the positive, do we discuss whether we are giving up our most basic values in the name of security. Have the terrorists already won?
