We were not there. However, I do not belive it was based on his skin color or race. Here are my reasons:

It seems like a quick search - therefore routine, not specific.

They seemed respectful of his rights, no overt signs to say otherwise.

I think they deserve the same benefit of doubt that the individual stopped is getting.

I am basically saying that I accept the statements as presented. But I am using my experiences to show that everyone was in the right here. I said I think the increase in sensativity on both sides is the culprit.

About the "guns": Hands on is not drawn. It just means the officer is being cautious going into a situation they are unsure of. A person in a car has a lot more cover than a person standing outside it. You can not see the hands of the driver or passenger. If they wanted to shoot you, even with your hands on your weapon, they would get the first shot (surprize is almost always in their advantage).

I took part in studies at our local police academy about officer response. An armed person can cover 16-20 feet before an officer can draw their weapon. So to be safe from a charge, an officer must be 20 feet from the person. This is not realistic, and officers know the risks they are taking. Unfortunately most people do not realize this.

It only takes one time of letting your guard down to die. This is every officer's fear (even before 9-11).

So this was not an overreaction, and it was not based on anything but the unknown factors of the situation.

Sometimes we need to understand both sides to see the truth is not only in our own perspective.
