But you also have to understand that you are the physical force of the state. If tyranny imposes itself, it will be through your hands (you plural). Several amendments of the Constitution were written to limit your power, which suggests that the founders were chiefly concerned about limiting your power.

My points are not to make light of your service or commitment. My point is that liberty is a very fragile thing, wholely dependent on some very ecological balances that have arisen from 900 years of common law evolution. I am concerned that this event may upset that balance, and a ripple here or there can snowball into the end of our experiment.

I realize that as a civil liberties attorney, I am bound to make your job more difficult. But you wouldn't want to live in a society where your job was too easy.
