Subject: Guerillas vs. Terrorist.

The distinction is clear. First, it must be recognized that a distinction is necessary. We live in a world that has become extremely international. Therefore, the International Laws formed by organizations like the United Nations and Nato require a distinction. A comment was made in last weeks class that I really agreed with. It was the concept that guarillas some legitimacy and that legitimacy creates a forum for compromise. However, Terrorists aren't seen as legit organizations/groups and in this they don't have a seat at the table. The question then becomes what makes an organization legit. I feel legitimacy comes from respect gained from success. Further, it is a respect that reaches beyond country borders. The success in this equation should be defined by liberation. I feel that guarillas seek to be liberated from a life of oppression from their government. The most complicated portion of creating a distinction is in the actions of these groups. It can be said that both use terrorist strategies or guarilla strategies. However, I claim that these are just acts. They should be viewed as seperate when trying to define in organization as guarilla or terrorist.
