There is actually no problem in practice. There are two major junctions in how AFVs are handled, including armor modifiers and gun lethality.

First change occurs between SL and CoI.

CoI does to the detail of AFV and ordnance combat what SL does for infantry. SL AFVs are perfectly functional and work fine, but those who like to experience the specific weapon and vehicle differences need to look to CoI. No commentary about CoI ordnance rules on this sitre yet, but I have written some about SL AFVs, see tactics articles under scenario Epsilon (Tanker's Delight).

Next change happens between CoD and GI.

GI actually simplifies the TH process, but at the expense of creating some poor links to the CoI baseline, namely the CoI German vehicles. In many senses GI is a "poor man's" ASL, as it also introduces many other things that were standardized in ASL. [And as a personal aside, even though I Beta playtested ASL, GI was the beginning of the end for me and I eventually quit until I could return to the earlier design concepts through internet opponents!]

Then there is ASL, which we need not discuss much here.

The ASL changes resulted in a complete re-do of all ordnance and armor values consistent with the groundwork laid by GI. It works, but not necessarily any better than the previous presentations.

With a little bit of imagination it is pretty easy to recreate any European theater action, you can even modify vehicle characteristics to represent say, Italian vehicles. As for American vehicles, with a little care, the GI values can be used even in scenarios that are not meant to require the use of the GI rules. Like it is stated in the introduction of the very first rulebook (SL), this is a system that can be adapted to fit almost any situation or interest!

So Mark (and others), no need to despair. You should do fine with the system, as it is written. All of us here do just that, while enjoying every minute of it, too! :-)
