Subject: shad

I think this topic was on here a long time ago. I had a member ask me what I know: I think I know far less than many of you so share your knowledge.
I don't know of anyone getting shad on Wilson. I don't know if anyone tries anymore. I've been getting mine on Kanopolis lately. It is full of shad, but they are not always easy to find.
These are some things I've learned:
Try to never move shad from a water temp diff of more than 10 degrees.
Well water - works great but as temp warms, may need to warm the water.
Regular tap water - works, but needs to be treated with something to remove the chlorine.
Additives like Shad Keep (in bass pro magazine) or I'm now trying some stuff from a sponsor of Madd Jack from
Bassmedics.com and is working well, these are not necessary, but I think they help that initial 24
hours for foam reduction and decreased stress.
Keep the foam off the top. Additives like No Foam, Foam Off (I get mine fromhttp://www.catchnbait.com/livebaitwells.html) If you have none, coffeemate creamer (powder) kind of works
Run your water in your tank an hour if possible before putting shad in there.
I use 1 handful of rock salt (water softener salt) for every 10 gallons of water.
Switch out water, 20-30% each of the first 2-3 days
The longest I've kept shad is 1 week, but I think some of the guys are keeping them longer
If your tanks is filtered, you can get by with warmer water, otherwise shad need cooler water to help
oxygenate the water.
The number of shad per tank depends on the size of shad and the time of year(cooler temp= more shad). For large shad, generally 1 per 1 gallon of water.
Some places where you get shad will just have healthier shad and good shad are much harder to kill. I
wish I had a good spot around here for good shad.
I've been working with shad for 3 years and am still learning and still kill a bunch on occasion. Lots of
these guys know way more than me, but I'm happy to share what I know.
Paul, Sniper
