I basically do the same as you Paul. I use a chemical bought at walmart (use Tap water) because it takes the chlorine and Bromine out. Lots of citys switch from chlorine to bromine later in the year. And i use 1 1/2-2 cups of water softner salt. Thats it. I have found that temp. in the tank seems to be the most important factor for me. I will try to hold my tank in the 65-70 degrees. If the water im takeing them from is more than 10 warmer i will than that i will after the bait is in just start gradually cooling it down with 2 liter frozen bottles that i save up through the winter. I run 75-100 5"-6" baits and around 50-60 baits if over 6" in my 30 gallon tank.
