Subject: We have liftoff!

This week sees the third annual RiverFestival in Brisbane, and tonight's "opening ceremony" of the festival is a pyrotechnic display known as RiverFire. Two city centre bridges and half a dozen skyscrapers are decked-out in fireworks which are detonated in synch with a rock music soundtrack broadcast on the local Triple M.

It's really quite a spectacle if one manages to get the right vantage point to view it from, but the finale is something which literally be seen from practically anywhere in the region -- a "dump-and-burn" by an F-111 from Amberley. A D&B is most spectacular at night, I think, with a great tongue of flame spearing into the sky. I tell you, this is something words just cannot adequately describe. :)

Tonight's D&B was seen from as far away as Redcliffe and Caboolture in the North, and Marsden (near Beenleigh) in the South -- which is where I'm going on this thread, believe me... ;)

It was reported shortly after the display, that observers out that way mistook the D&B for an ultralight plane crashing, and called the cops. As if the emergency services haven't got enough on their plates with bushfires burning between Ipswich and Loganholme, and even on Mount Coot-tha!

I just hope the cops who answered the call are a little understanding over this little misunderstanding -- people can still be prosecuted in Queensland for giving information to the cops that turns out to be incorrect...
