Subject: My thoughts on the proposal
In reply to: Dean M 's message, "Inter-Regional Championships Proposal" on 20:47:08 07/10/00 Mon

Hi everyone

Here is a copy of my thoughts on the proposal, which I have forwarded to Jolene, one of the Northern Region's events organisers. I'd been keen to get feedback from others in the Region though.

Hi Jolene

I've had a look at the proposal you submitted. It looks pretty good, but some concerns have been expressed about the outdoor venue and its susceptibility to bad weather. I don't know about that, 'cause I've never played at Waimarino, but I have played major tournaments outdoors in bad conditions, like the 1995 Aotearoa International in the wind and rain at the Lake Pupuke quarry, and that was manageable, even with atrocious conditions. So I don't have a real big problem with the fact that IRs might be outdoors.

I'm not sure whether the proposal gets decided on by the Competitions Council, but if so and it came to a vote, at this stage I'd probably have to abstain out of ignorance of the venue. But that might change if you could persuade me of how the organisers would deal with bad weather, and if you could quantify what the risk of bad weather might be at that time of year.

It's also obviously a bit more of a hassle for those of us from down south to get to the IR champs if Nationals is hosted outside the main centers: the best we could probably do is fly to Rotorua for $245 return each, and then somehow work out how to get us and our boats from there to Tauranga. Do you think there would be any scope for the organisers helping us out with getting from Rotorua (or from some other place that connects with Christchurch) to Tauranga?

One other point: we have been able to get Mikasa balls from Rebel Sports in Christchurch for about half the price that is given in the proposal for balls (OK, they are the Taiwanese Mikasas, not the Japanese ones, but it's hard to tell the difference). It might have a nice impact on the comp budget if you tried to get the same deal.

[...] Personally I don't have a big problem with the proposal if we can work together to solve some of the logistics issues and if there is a plan in place to deal with unfavourable environmental conditions.

I have one other question: is there a Plan B? If the proposal was rejected, would NCPA come up with an alternative, or would it then fall to the other Regions to come up with something (if, of course, they do not have a competing proposal in the works already)?

Thanks Jolene. I hope this doesn't sound too officious. It's good that you've got a reasonably detailed proposal together so early. I'd be interested in how the NCPA responds to these issues.

Bye for now,

- Dean
