She’d been bad at a lot of things, relationships especially; she’d never stuck to one guy long after leaving Cascade. The one night stands blurring together from town to town. She’d made an oath to avoid the dark tanned men that came to her, Latin or otherwise, they reminded her too much of him and she’d even called out his name once by accident. That’d killed her current partner’s mood instantly. Though she’d laughed it off, it’d nearly killed her too.
He was talking, so was the operator and both were overpowering the other. His shallow reply to not knowing was ignored, of course he didn’t know. She hadn’t told him, that was her own fault and not his, but she was still mad at him because of it. Women! Even in her mind she saw it as irrational, but she couldn’t stop it, didn’t know how.
The operator was asking if she was still there, agitation evident in their voice, as Shania listened to Freb explain what had happened to the others of the crew. Seemed her luck hadn’t fully run out, but seeing as she’d rarely had any to begin with, she had less rope to grab from the start. She was almost relieved when a strong hand reached out to grasp the phone flipping the phone shut with a flick of his wrists and silencing the nagging on the other line. ”I was using that.” Attention diverting to his hand that now held her phone, she could easily take it back, or so she assumed but that meant closing what little distance there already was between them.
She didn’t think there was enough control in her body to keep from doing something if she got any closer and what she’d do was still up in the air. Punch him? Kiss him? Both? She didn’t know, all she knew is that every fiber of her being was on fire for this man and that this new Freb had her attention peaked. ”Why?” The question a single word, but holding many meanings, but unlike others in her group she elaborated soon after. ”Why stop? There’s nothing here for me. I just came to get my truck, then I was heading back to Canada.” It was the truth, it had been her plan, she hadn’t expected to run into a ghost in the processes. And even as she stood there glaring at him, she realized, she didn’t plan to run from one either. She was just refusing to make it easy on him, or her…as was her prerogative.
