Subject: Jail guard killed in police shootout

WESTMINSTER - A state correction officer who police said had been brandishing a handgun and making threats at a Fitchburg bar Sunday died after exchanging gunfire with police outside his home.

A spokesman for the Worcester District Attorney’s Office said Michael A. Membrino, 49, of Westminster, was pronounced dead at Heywood Hospital in Gardner shortly after the Sunday night exchange of gunfire with police.

Spokesman Don Xenos did not disclose whether Membrino, who was wearing body armor during the incident, was shot by police or if he shot himself.

He said the circumstances of the shooting remain under investigation.

The Massachusetts Department of Correction said Membrino was an officer at the North Central Correctional Institution, a medium-security facility located in Gardner.

Witnesses told authorities that Membrino had been brandishing a handgun while making threats at Partner’s Pub in Fitchburg earlier on Sunday.

Authorities did not divulge the nature of the threats Membrino was alleged to have made at the bar. Police later found Membrino at his home
