CONCORD, N.H.—New Hampshire police and firefighters would have to work an extra five years before collecting retirement benefits under a bill before the Senate.

Workers hired after July 1 would need 25 years on the job instead of 20 before collecting benefits. The House-passed bill also would raise the minimum retirement age from 45 to 50, but the Senate proposes deleting the age requirement.

Fiscal conservatives are supporting the bill. Police and fire unions had objected, arguing the changes would harm older members who can't meet the physical demands of the work.
