Smelt is a member of the Salmon family.
They live in the Sea, but spawn in the upper reaches of fresh water streams.
brook lamprey live all of their lives in freshwater, but There is a species of lamprey that live and feed in the sea, and run up into fresh water to spawn.
All lampreys and most Smelts die after spawnining.
Both smelt and lamprey run up rivers on the East coast of Britain, however the numbers of both species are declining.
