Maybe in order to cope with the fact of how evil her daughter really was, she needed to be reassured by the fact that the kid wasn't really hers. That was her way of coping with the trauma that her child was the devil who killed her hubby in cold blood....or should that be warm blood?
Anyway , I think to know that your own flesh and blood could be so evil would be too much for anyone so her only relief from that trauma was to drive home to herself that the kid wasn't really hers. Forget about the kid. She must have loved the kid though. Anyone would. Even adopted kids are loved beyond belief. All I can say that is....it's X Files.
