I find it fascinating to watch the ads on some of my American XF tapes. Yes, CW did a marvellous job of cutting out the ads but there are a few that have snuck in and it's odd to see them as you all would see them.

I find that we know more about other countries' culture because of television. Once American shows was all we got and if you wanted British you got comedies on the ABC. That was it. [I still say you can't beat British comedies.] I 'get' more british references because our culture has still a very british base. Many of our slang words are from the cockney culture. We [anglo-aussies] don't have many differences from british culture as the generations are still in the 1st and 2nds [I'm a 3rd] . What we understand of Americanisms comes from TV. So anything that we dont see, such as ads or sport, we won't know about. That's what I didn't get on XF.
The thing is that noone gets our TV shows. I watched "A Country Practice" in Switzerland about 14 yrs ago. That was in french and I laughed all the way through it. Britain gets our night time soaps [dreadful shows] and America gets Steve Irwin on cable. I mean, that isn't a fair exchange of culture now is it? Is there anyone who has seen an Australian show apart from these I've mentioned? Oh and that doesn't count Skippy, Detoured. Seems everyone gets Skippy but us. lol. So if you all don't get any of our shows then I'll just have to keep indoctrinating you with Australiana on these boards whether you like it or not.
So I'm gunna hafta nick orf now. Time for a quick cuppa and a dip in me pool with the nippers.
