Subject: Beyond The Sea

As I was looking to see which episode came after Fire, I was shocked to see it was Beyond The Sea. My first thought was, "That's a season one episode?!" My next thought was, "Woo-hoo!"

I love this one. Mulder and Scully switch roles (for the first time?), with Mulder being the skeptic and Scully the believer. Poor Scully was an emotional wreck!

The scene in her hotel room where she admits to Mulder that she lied to the police about how she came across the warehouse where the kids were held is a classic. He chastises her for taking foolish chances, and she shoots back, "I thought you'd be pleased that I'd opened myself up to extreme possibilities." Ah, Mulder as father figure or dominating male presence in Scully's life! A theme that will come up periodically.

I've always been puzzled by the switch back to their usual roles at the end. All along Mulder said that Boggs was a fraud, then seems to have a change of heart. I finally decided it had very little to do with Boggs. After Scully tells him what has happened since her father's death (I assume she tells him - we don't get to see it), Mulder recognizes that some sort of paranormal phenomena may have been at work, though not necessarily related to Boggs. Also, the switch back was a necessary part of Scully's grieving process. She finally felt strong enough to resume her old beliefs.

Or maybe I'm reading too much into it.
