Questions

I had several questions but after reading many of the responses to my first post, I have many more.

1. It seems that many of you felt that just talking with me (an outsider) was disloyal. Is there a strong sense of loyalty among CO’s? Is it among all CO’s (no matter what prison) or do CO’s from one institution stick together?

2. I read other posts where CO’s complained about having to work on holidays – even when they had seniority? How is that possible given the union rules?

3. How supported do you feel by management (either DOC or Sheriff / depending on prison or jail)

4. Do you feel management understands your position and all the things CO’s need to put up with?

5. Studies show that 35-45% of CO’s have PTSD. What support / trainings do you get?

6. If someone has PTSD, they likely would begin to have trouble at work (tardiness, absenteeism). When a CO is late or absent, are they provided services or just disciplined?

7. I have read that Correctional Officers, have double the suicide rate of other professions. Additionally, they have trouble with alcohol, drugs, and divorce at exceptionally high rates. What is being done about this?

8. Do you feel that the career of correctional officer is as respected as it should be?

9. I read a post that said a correctional officer only carries a walkie-talkie and may be watching 40-60 prisoners. Is this true?

10. Have you ever come home and had a difficult time “letting go”; maybe ordering family around or staying hyper vigilant even in safe surroundings?
