Finding the Summer Jam at Watkins Glen website was really a thrill, and I feel so lucky to be able to share my remembrances of it. What memories the photos bring back! My friends and I had come down from Rochester, and thinking that it would be hard getting through all of the traffic, we had reserved a campsite at Watkins Glen State Park for Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights. It was a good thing we did, considering the large numbers of people that showed up. After setting up our tents Friday afternoon, we went to walk the trail along the gorge. It was so funny seeing tourists gawking at the nude kids wading in the waterfalls and the stream. The most vivid memories that come to mind now are of what I would call "drugstore row," which was a lineup of cars and vans with people standing next to them hawking their drugs for sale. I also remember trying to sleep down at the concert site Friday night, and being stepped on not purposefully, but repeatedly, to the point that sleep was near impossible for me, not that it really upset me much. In many ways, the music itself was sort of a blur: I do remember the long sets and the jam session, but almost more than the music, the huge number of people, a sea of people as far as the horizon stretched, was wondrous while at the same time sort of overwhelming. But what a good vibe, and really really, what good kids we all were then. I remember seeing an ambulance stuck in the mud on the road out, and several young men just picked the ambulance right up out of the mud and put it back on solid ground. After the music was over, we stayed until Monday morning, I think. I remember Sunday night, our campsite was raided by state police, a reminder that the "man" was never far off. Although we were all holding drugs, no one got busted, fortunately. What a cosmic time it all was!
