Subject: Falklands Requisition

Since it's topical.... I was reading the BBC webiste on the Falklands 25 years on, and Wikipedia referred to Uganda docking in Naples to discharge it's cargo of children all singing Rule Britannia. I was one of those with Birkdale School, Sheffield.

The cruise left Venice, and then went to Sparta. From there it was supposed to go to Rhodes, Egypt and Israel (I think), but it all got rearranged and we went to Egypt before she turned around and we were told the cruise was being cut short.

Main memories:

The accommodation - awful. Worse than awful. We were in the bowels of the ship, with no windows. I remember being slightly affronted when I read that the accommodation was being upgraded to make it fit for troops to live in!

Cheesy films - lots of Beatles films and Tom and Jerry

Being requisitioned - arriving in Naples was a lot of fun! I was only 11 and we really didn't have a clue what was going on!

Coming home - looking back it must have been a logistocal nightmare. We got flown back to the UK but had to stay about 6 to a room in a hotel before being taken back to Sheffield. My parents told me later that no-one could or would tell them what was going on

Happy memories - I spent time with friends seeing lots of great things, and having a good laugh. I wonder these days whether something equivalent to these educational cruises still exists, but I doubt it.

All in all, it was a great experience, and we all got 50% refunds!
