I was on the SS Uganda school cruise in April 1974, we flew from Gatwick to Malta, then on to Gibralter, Tangier and our next stop was to be Lisbon in Portugal, But just has we were nearing the harbour, the ship was turned away. We were all called to a assembly with our various teacher's who explained that there was a revolution going on and it was not safe to dock (not terribly intresting to a fourteen year old ) But when I think back now, to how close we came to landing!!!, we then went on to Corunna, where one of the lads from our school got lost and the ship almost sailed without him, and without the poor teacher who was looking frantically for him, thankfully at the last minute, the teacher came running down the dock (dragging the lad by the scruff of his neck, which was allowed and expected, in those days ) Then we stopped at Santander before coming back to Southampton. I travelled with Moorthorpe Middle school from West Yorkshire a mixed group of boys and girls, I can't remember what dorm the boys where in but our dorm was called piccard and we shared it with some girls from Scotland. During the cruise we made friends with some people from a school in London Mike Whalsh ? or Welsh, Jane? and another lad with black hair who lost the tip of his finger when he got it trapped in one of the dorm doors. I can also remember half the ship being sick when we went round the bay of Biscay and the ship was being thrown all over, needless to say the ones of us not sick retired to the huge common room to eat crisps and watch the giant waves through the big windows. Sadly I've only got a few photo's of the cruise but I've got tons of brilliant memories.
