I remember the school cruise of November 1979 with fond memories. We paid about £150 which we paid in installments of £25 each month leading up to it. We were from Ferndown Upper School. I remember the DC10 and the ceiling falling in so you could see all the wires above; and an engineer screwing the roof back up! Scary as at the time there were DC10s on the news having problems with engines or something... We couldn't dock in Alexandria because of some political dispute,so we missed the Pyramids!
We were badly sick on the second day being thrown from one side of the deck to the other. SICK EVERYWHERE ! and the smell lingered for the rest of the holiday! Some poor people were in sick bay for the whole cruise.
I remember queuing down the steps for food on those trays and seeing a row of Indian men smiling up saying "Allo Charlie" and us back the same.
We went to Jerusalem and little boys followed us shouting "50 English p" for little drums on sticks with strings attached and balls on the end and shouting "English fish and chips!" We waded through St.Mark's square with our jeans pulled up over our knees. I remember the petty officer (I think) who the girls had a crush on and would boom over the tannoy in the mornings. We danced to Sailing, I will survive, and cried to Leaving on a jet plane. I was presented with a cake on the last day as it was my 14th birthday (which was nice).
There was a boy called Paul who I met up with in Bournemouth once after the cruise. He was from Portchester School I think. We never met again!!
Fantastic holiday. Anyone else remeber that particular cruise.
