My Father in Law served on the Mellette and was present during Okinawa and Iwo Jima as Coxwain on an LCVP. Only when I asked him about his experiences would he tell me. Never did Buck start any conversation about the war. During Assult landings, he mentioned that he quickly learned how to back his Higgins boat away from the beach head, that the ramp offer much better cover that the stern. He was also issued an M-1 Carbine, when asked "What am I to use this for?" He was told "If any of these Marines won't get out, you are to shoot 'em", Buck laughed and knew he wasn't about to force anyone out.
He also told me that he carried over several of the Mellette's officers to the Missouri for the surrender.
Buck was a good man, he passed away in June of '07.
