We were the late arrivals getting to lovely Sampson on
the 4th of July, 1945. I always tell everybody that when
the Japs heard we were coming, they surrended! Seriously
the 10 weeks we spent there were rememberable to say the
least but a good experience for cocky 18 year olds. My
18th and 19th birthdays were spent in the navy(July 19th)
I was discharged in August of 1946 when the navy had no
more need of us. Sad to say, the dropping of the atom
bombs probably saved us from taking part in the invasions
0f Japan scheduled for November of 1946.
