My wife's grandfather was on the Auburn. George Webb is now 85. He said that a few black guys died on the ship from the kamikazes. He said that the black sailors were seperated and placed in other areas of the ship after this. Mr. George carried boys ashore during the campaigns at Iwo Jima and Okinawa. He also carried Gerneral Buckner to shore shortly before he died on Okinawa. Mr. George told me the he operated the 40mm gun when they were under attack. He also told me that he climb the mast while they where sailing into Tokyo Harbor.
