Subject: Construction of the base

I am trying to find out information related to the construction of the base. My grandfather apparently helped to build it, commuting from downstate (Mt. Kisco) to the base every weekend during some part of the early 1940s. Today the trip takes about 5 hours on major highways and at highway speeds; I can't imagine how long it would have taken on 1940s roads in a 1940s automobile. Does anyone know of a resource that might identify construction personnel from that time? Any suggestions appreciated. Thanks in advance!
