The story is a bit muddled, but that's not unusual. The retelling of war stories often gets a bit confused.

If Truman had not dropped the bombs it is likely that he would have been part of the 1946 invasion of Japan.

It's also likely that he could have been part of the almost one million casualties estimated. (dead and wounded).
