The ship he probably was on the most was the Cavallaro

She was a Destroyer Escort converted to an attack Transport.
The Slater www.slater.org is a wonderful restortation of a DE. You will get a great idea of what his life was like.

The other 3 ships were Destroyers - a trip to Battleship Cove will be the best place to see one.

Since he enlisted in January 1945 he would have been in the invasion of Japan in late 1945 and into 1946. For an idea of what he would have gone through, read Opeation Iceberg by Gerald Astor. More sailors than soldiers died at Okinawa. Suicide attacks have always been an effective technique.

Deck logs for each of the ships would tell you when he came and went, but they are in DC and that's about all you would get.

Visiting the Slater will tell you more than will learn anywhere else. I was last there on July 4 and will be there again on August 29 - with Irv Messinger who was at Sampson and on a DE the same time your Grandfather was. Check out his section of the website.
