Ms. Scott, saw your posting & just had to reply! I live by & grew up around Sampson Naval Base (my Grandparents lived there for awhile as well!)
I don't think anyone knows for sure if there were subs out there (if they do, they probably can't talk about it :) ) but I know they've had a naval research boat on seneca lake for many years. Rumor has it they are researching the lake as it is most unusual (they haven't found bottom in some spots yet, the deepest they've found is 437ft. deep.)
You're rumor may stem from the fact that while researching seneca lake, they may have sent out underwater devices (probably unmanned) to check the depth of the lake & take samples of things found underwater. But we're a small town & people like to talk, esp. about things that are mysterious... like seneca lake!
I will ask around to see if I can confirm your suspicions about the subs. SOmeone around here just may have a more acurate answer than mine.
