Do you remember me telling you about my home teacher of several years back, Brother Salter, and some things he gave me to ponder? One of which was the whole shoe-issue? This David thing is another point to ponder that he gave me. And what you've said here ties into that. The thought he left me with that time went something like, 1. God can do nothing to harm, only to bless us; and 2. David was cast out - I think he actually used the word Hell to describe where David is now. Then he said, how is it that these two statements don't contradict each other?

Remind me to dig out that little notecard he left with me, to show this to you. I really like what you said about the sure mercies of David. The thought that I came up with as I've been pondering it, is that very often in the Old Testament, "David" is used to refer to Christ, because He was "of the house of David". So then, my thinking went, perhaps this phrase means, "the sure mercies of Christ" instead, and thus refers directly to the Atonement. So then it read, "I will make an everlasting covenant with you, even the Atonement" instead?
