Erwin,
I had to find the board again (new computer died...again), and saw you are also into ultralights, along with bikes, and r/c...My god man! When did you find time to father children...errr..nevermind, I dont want to know.

I fthe Tamiyas you are talking about are 01's, I'd go with any of the stock motors available, they are quite fast, if you really want to go with mods, I would not go below a 17 turn, and buy a machine wound, not hand wound, a little slower, but much, much cheaper.

ESC's, Novak has some really good budget ESC's (great for kids starting out)at around 50-60 bucks. Batteries, get at least 2000mah batteries (gives decent run times). If the kids are not going to race anytime soon, and just play around, buy unmatched packs, they are quite a bit cheaper, which means you can buy more.

One last thing to remember with the Tamiyas. They use a metric 48 pitch(at least the 01/02, if I remember correctly) gearing. You can make a standard 48 pitch work, but it will chew gears up, and makes an incredibly annoying whine, so you may want to pick up a few Tamiya pinion gears.
