I know this was posted back in February, but I just wanted to add a note for anyone else who is reading this with a similiar problem.

My 3 dogs (1 is a pit mix) are all kept crated (the most spacious crates I could find) when I am at work or otherwise not at home. The backyard is not an option because the pit mix is a digger (I can't leave him unattended out there for longer than 15 minutes). Freedom inside the house is not an option because they are all destructive and I don't trust their housebreaking for an entire day. A dog door won't work because my cats would get out and the dogs would probably still dig out. And I live in a heavily wooded area with all sorts of wild animals.

Anyways, to me crating them is alot better than the alternative that the dogs (especially the pit) were facing before I adopted them. It also keeps them out of things that could harm them or make them ill.

If you only crate them when you aren't there, then there is NOTHING WRONG with that! As long as they are out when you are home and get to sleep near you - well it's a better life than most dogs have. The only time you should feel bad or guilty about crating is if you keep them crated even when you are home. If you do this then one must question why on earth you have a dog in the first place!

As long as you follow the rule of keeping them crated for the shortest amount of time possible, then you are doing ok and you are not a bad pet owner. Your dog would rather stay with you than go to a new home that you know nothing about.
