Adopted female pitbull approximately 7 - 8 months, the firtst of Dec. We have horses, cats, chickens, rabbits, and 2 yr old aggressive male 1/2 toy rat terrier, 1/2 toy manchester housedog. We keep only the 2 dogs in the house, but Pinto is adapting well to outside animals as well. I have always had a dobie, but this girl is every bit as smart and eager to please. She loves to chase cats and I was afraid she would kill one if she caught it. To my relief, recently when they stopped, she did too and just smelled eagerly. I had been taking her out on leash and made her sit while I introduced my barn cats. I pet the cat and let her smell my hand. When she is off leash and can't resist the impulse to chase I scold her and shame her for the bad behavior. My dobes would learn the home cats, but would still run off strays and visiting toms (not a bad deal LOL). Sometimes I believe you get what you expect. I expect my animals to all respect each other, reward and shame again, again, again consistently.
I don't allow the dogs outside unsupervised because the neighbors don't live far enough away. So there are lots of opportunities to reinforce the new learned behavior. I have a tomcat that is really skittish because of his prowling at the other neighbors, and I am thinking about crating him so they can rub noses. I don't think he'll ever slow down any other way. lol This also works with the rabbits and chickens so far.
And she seems to be very comfortable with horses, which is alot better than a labador I had to give to my parents because he was so jealous and aggressive of my horses. Hopefully, things will continue to improve with time.
