points for chapt. 20:

*…As I already mentioned, the point counterpoint opinion shows, don’t have to have a counterpoint anymore, sayeth the law 1978, right before Cable comes in, fully, by 1981; right when talking head commentators censure the other sides view, is the way now. The law must be brought back …..No more advertising news stations. …..Free Speech is also equal access.

*”I believe the truth is the glue that holds government together,…” Gerald Ford said in his inaugural address, concerning Watergate; but,… it is also fact.

*“Within the space of two hours on September 6, PFLP gangs hijacked a TWA jet, a Swissair jet, and made an unsuccessful attempt to seize control of an El Al airplane. About two hours later, another PFLP group hijacked a Pan Am jet and forced the crew to fly to Beirut airport, where the airplane landed almost out of fuel. The next day the airliner was flown to the Cairo airport, where it was blown up only seconds after the 176 passengers and crew had completed their three-minute forced evacuation.” regarding hi jacking by the Fedayeen. *The environment is noted now as an important issue, by 1972. Referred to as Ecology.

*Hubert Humphrey was Vice-president under president Johnson, Senator from Minnesota, Majority Whip in Congress at one point, and the Democratic Presidential nominee. The curious conundrum of a Democratic moderate from the 1960’s. In the same age range as Mr. Reagan, and Mr. Ford, he also was an ivory tower sort of fellow, as most Congressmen today. His political liberalism had more to do with civil rights issues then anything else. He was told he was “weak on communism”, as he had created an anti communist Democratic group in the 1950’s, when such groups sounded like they ought to be or something.

*Presidential televised debates never again occurred, since the famous debate between Kennedy and Nixon, 1960, until, 1976. President Ford and Mr. Carter did debate twice.
Mr. Ford did well on the first debate, but when he said, “countries of Eastern Europe were not under the domination of the Soviet Union.”, he received a lot of flack. [quote from Oxford.com, Answers.com.]

*“In September 1974 Ford offered Vietnam War deserters Presidential clemency if they participated in a work program. The contrast with the unconditional pardon given to Nixon seemed outrageous to many people.” [As, Nixon received 200,000 dollars from the government after he resigned; but Ford wanted him to have more then that.] --Oxford.com

*Patricia Hearst, born 1954, is the grand daughter of the news paper publishing magnate, William Randolph Hearst. Her famous grandfather is why she was kidnapped by a group called the Symbionese Liberation Army. [SLA], Feb. 1974. The SLA wanted members released from prison originally, and to use Patty Hearst, age 19, for a swap. When this went no where, they said they will release her, if her father gave food to all the poor people in California. Her father did disperse food; but the SLA said it wasn’t good food, so they did not release Ms. Hearst. In a tape recording, Patty, as she was called, said her dad could have done better; and now it is claimed, that she joined this group herself, and changed her name to Tania. In April she was with them, when they robbed a bank; and she was bearing arms. A warrant was now issued for her arrest. …Although Patty Hearst was an apolitical sort, before the kidnapping, she was sentenced to 35 years in jail, in March of 1976. Her prison term was commuted by President Carter to seven years; and then commuted by him again, releasing her from prison in Feb. of 1979; and in 2001, President Clinton granted Patricia Hearst a full pardon. [The SLA were a militant group that didn’t even go back to the 1960’s. Originally a black militant group, there was only one black member in the group..] ---- Seems, it is cruel to prosecute someone who was originally kidnapped.

*“Roe vs. Wade was a great, great decision.” Betty Ford on CBS’ “60 Minutes.” said.

*“An elderly Texas oil man posed a rhetorical question: What is the difference between OPEC and the Texas Railroad Commission? His answer: OPEC doesn't have any Texas Rangers!” WTRG Economics website regarding oil price controls.

*“The oil-price-control system established several tiers of oil prices.” Commanding Heights. by Daniel Yergin and Joseph Stanislaw, 1997 ed., pp. 60-64 PBS website.

*“Rockefeller donated the salary he received as vice president to two causes. Half was given to the creation of federal programs to educate inner-city, low income children and to fund youth and family centers in the urban cities. The other half was donated to the preservation and promotion of programs teaching the arts in low income public school systems.” [wikipedia]
