The art of exchange, Ralph, is in the difference between they who exchange. Old mate Itlod often accuses us variously of being sycophants of one another. That is far from the actuality.

As I said, the bloke's a peanut. But when old mate Bullimore got stranded upside down south seas and our navy went to the rescue, we went to the rescue. Then later we complained.

In my books, the story here is not whether old mate Jojannessen [I could not be bothered to remember his name] is a peanut.. for that is a given.. it is the act of sanction, the pompous act of denial to the peanut, as if they were entitled to deny the goose the fuel. The navy didn't say to Bullimore: Hey mate, you didn't let us know ... and we have the right to teach you and others a lesson ...

Did the Yanks and Kiwis really expect a flood of copy cat idiots flying to South Pole on limited fuel? Hardly! They were merely exercising their supposed right of denial, of power to deny.

The Pom who died this week in Simpson Desert is another example... would you deny the bloke some water simply to teach him a lesson?
