I'm not at all clear what cargo/kago means. I hope that it will become clearer as time passes and I learn more. Right now it seems like a huge classification for all the baggage that Europeans bring with them wherever they go because it makes them feel powerful. I would rephrase the question as "How is it that the Europeans can waltz into a place like the island of New Guinea and make it over into what they think it ought to be which includes taking all the good things like gold, copper, lumber, etc. away and making them into more "stuff".

Part of it is arrogance, of course. But I respect Jared Diamond's opinions enough to want to read the book and find out what he thinks the answer is. All I have to do is tear myself away form the keyboard and turn the damn computer off.
