Subject: Can the same people be Liberals and Facists?
In reply to: Buffy's vampire 's message, "Another theft of our money by Liberals" on 12:22:27 03/09/02 Sat

I've always been under the impression that Liberal and Facists were about 180 degrees apart from each other on every issue. Here in the USA, the right-wing side of the Republican Party has done a very good job of making the word "Liberal" an epithet. Call someone a Liberal and you might as well say that they want to have the government make all your decisions for you. Which is really rather silly given that Liberalism -- at least the 19th Century variety associated with the Abolitionist movement -- helped to bring the Republican Party into existance. Liberalism brought us improvements in educational policy, gave women and ex-slaves the right to vote, and was very much involved with defeating the Nazi Facists in the 40's and founding the United Nations. So I've never been quite certain why anyone would think being a Liberal is bad.

Facists, on the other hand, have been associated with restricting individual liberty, suppressing freedoms most of us take for granted here, and generally haven't done anything well with the possible exception of creating efficient military organizations. Oh and in Italy, Mussolini's Facists made the trains run on time.
